Dealing with Hard Water

Hard water can affect your home in many ways. Did you know that while hard water is safe to consume, it can cause limescale to build up inside your home? Limescale can accumulate in appliances, pipes, and heaters which can reduce their efficiency and their overall lifespan. Plus, over time clothes and towels washed in hard water can become stiff whilst white fabrics turn grey and colourful fabrics lose their brightness.

Here we have made a list of a few ways you can deal with Hard water:

Install an Ion Softener for your Water Supply

This is the most common way to treat hard water. At Holman Plumbing a fully licensed plumber can install your ion softener so the water is filtered as it runs into your home.
An ion softener system will remove the calcium and magnesium ions in the hard water and exchange them with sodium and/or potassium ions. This method is ideal – and recommended – for hard water that has been rated medium to very hard.

Boil the Hard Water

Boiling your water is a quick and easy way to fix hard water especially if you have a small amount of water and you intend to consume it. Boiling the water causes the salts, bicarbonates, and sulfates to precipitate leaving behind clean, soft water. Once you leave the water to cool, the mineral deposits sink to the bottom. As you pour the soft water from the pot, the calcium that causes hardness will leave behind a white, chalky sediment.
However, it must be noted that boiling only fixes temporary hardness and not permanent hardness.

Use a Reverse Osmosis System

A reverse osmosis filter can purify and distill your water with minimal fuss for you. This method is recommended (even for aquariums). A licensed plumber can install an osmosis filter to your drinking water supply or to the back of your fish tank. The process will use a semi-permeable membrane to separate particles and a very high percentage of dissolved contaminants from your water, leaving behind soft clean water for you or for your aquatic pets.

Add Washing Soda to your Laundry

Sodium carbonate also known as washing soda is soluble in water. It will react with the calcium and magnesium in the hard water to soften it. Washing soda can also help lift dirt and grime from your clothing. To add to this, the use of soft water instead of hard means your laundry detergent will produce more lather during the wash cycle. Saving you money in the long run.
