Part of the Cowichan Valley Regional District of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, Shawnigan Lake’s permanent population is a modest 8,558 (Consensus 2016); this number tends to double in the summer months when Vancouver residents visit the village to vacation. Located about 48 km north of Victoria, the capital of BC, Shawnigan Lake is on the eastern shore of the Island and while it is a popular recreation destination with activities from hiking and boating to lazing on the beach, services are limited.
